Welcome to the Bray Lake Watersports

Ice Breaker Series for 2021/22

The series includes five races held both physically and virtually, so you can take part no matter where you are.

Who can enter the races?

The Bray Lake Watersports Ice Breaker Series is open to all. Each race is a stand-alone event and forms part of the overall winter race series.

How can you take part?

You can enter the physical race held at Bray Lake Watersports or, virtually, so you can compete wherever you are. For virtual competitors, you have a small window of a few days to complete the required format and submit your result.

How are paddlers categorised?

The Bray Lake Watersports racing uses a division classification to categorise competitors. There are five divisions, and paddlers are classified using their time over a 2km distance. Your race division will be used throughout the series, and you must compete on the same board in each race. If you change boards, you must complete a new 2km time trial to update your Division.

What are the race divisions?

Your time over 2km is used to align to the below divisions.

Division 1 – 13:29 and under

Division 2 – 13:30 – 14:59

Division 3 – 15:00 – 16:29

Division 4 – 16:30 – 17:59

Division 5 – 18:00 and over

Details on how to set your Division and provide evidence of this can be found here.

How do you enter the Physical races?

For physical races held at Bray Lake Watersports, you can enter using Webscorer here. Each race can be entered individually, or you can buy a series ticket if you plan to compete in all five events.

How do you enter the Virtual races?

For virtual entry, your tickets are available through the website here. Our results submission page is where you will submit your results.

What are the dates and formats?

Race 1 - Sunday 10th October - 6km Lake Race

Race 2 - Sunday 14th November - 8km River Race*

Race 3 - Sunday 12th December - Super Sprint Series

Race 4 - Sunday 9th January - 6km joker Race

Race 5 - Sunday 13th February - Technical Super Series

Virtual entries have a four-day event window to complete the format - this is the following Wednesday after each date above.

*River Race is dependent on river conditions being suitable

When will the results be posted online?

Complete results will be available to download the day after the virtual event window closes through our Results page. Results will be classified separately by location and also combined overall for both physical and virtual paddlers.

How do you get a series ranking?

If you complete three or more races, you will automatically be entered into the overall series standings for your Division. Your series ranking is classified from your best three results.

Setting your Race Division

To enter the Ice Breaker Series, you are required to set your Race Division.

To do this, you must complete a 2km Time Trial using the same board you will race on.

With your submission, you will need to provide us with some form of evidence, such as a screenshot of your tracking device or a GPS device tracking log. If you change boards, you must complete a new 2km Time Trial if your Division should change.

Why the Division System

Bray Lake Watersports use the Division system to allow competitive paddling against other paddlers similar to yourself. As each Division is categorised by Time and therefore speed, this means you will be paddling with others of similar times throughout the series.

To make the division system work somewhat, paddlers must not handicap themselves when setting their Race Division.

Competing a 2km Time Trial

From a standing start, paddle 2km either by completing laps of a lake or an out and back route on a river or the sea. This ensures you don't get affected by wind and currents as best as possible.

We will then verify this against your Ice Breaker Series result to confirm that the Division is correct.

Submitting Your 2km Time Trial For Verification

Complete the form at the bottom of this page before entering the Ice Breaker Series, and we will do the rest. If you are unsure which Division you should be in, please message us through email or chat.

Virtual Entry Rules

  • Be Safe - It's yourself against the clock when you are competing virtually, so please wear an appropriate leash and make sure someone knows you're out on the water. We recommend using the PaddleLIVE feature within the Paddle Logger iOS app so friends and family know you are safe and can track your progress - details here.

  • Be Fair - You can paddle on rivers, lakes, canals or the sea; remember to be fair to others with the conditions you choose. We ask you not to use the tides, river flow or wind to your advantage and be honest with your result.

  • Own Risk - Remember you are taking part at your own risk - paddle in conditions you feel comfortable in and make sure someone knows you are on the water.

  • Start & Finish - To make it as fair as possible, you must start and finish in the same spot unless stated by the event format.

  • Standing Start - You must also start from a standstill; no rolling starts are allowed.

  • Drafting - If you paddle with friends, please do not draft paddlers outside of your division, and no drafting boat wash to gain an advantage.

  • Setting Your Time - You can only attempt your time once using the same format as the physical race held at Bray Lake Watersports.

  • Upload Results - Submit your time on the website here before the event closes on the submission page. Times outside of the event window will not be counted - you must complete your time within the dates of the event.
